4Great machine despite the pastel colors.
By ravenlrod
First off, I'm an amateur when it comes to sewing. I've been sewing for about 6 years and it has been pretty much just basic alterations and maintenance of my military uniforms. The Janome Sewist 500 is my third sewing machine. So far I am impressed.

PROS:

-My first project was sewing through two layers of leather straps on my pistol holster. We're talking 3/16" thickness and leather!! The Sewist 500 pounded through it with ease. My previous Brother and Singer could not have done this.

-The Sewist 500 is very user friendly. Again, I am an amateur when it comes to sewing. There is nothing difficult about using this machine. I was able to jump right on it and start sewing.

-The adjustable foot presser is very handy. It held my leather firmly in place without any problems.

-Honestly, this machine has more features then I am use to. I don't even know how to use them all and probably will never need to. This is a plus for the more experienced user, I'm sure.

-The included hard case/cover is an added bonus. Not only does it add an element of protection to my machine, but it also hides it when my fellow military buddies come over.

-In terms of portability, the Sewist 500 is pretty light and portable. It's a little larger than my previous two machines and takes up a little more room on my desk, but that is fine considering the added performance.

CONS:

-I actually wanted the Janome Thread Banger TB12 but it was sold out everywhere I looked. Unlike the TB12's aluminum body, the Sewist 500 is all plastic. I am stationed in Iraq currently and I travel extensively. I would've liked a machine that is built like a tank.

-Finally, not all people who sew are women. And regardless, not all women like pastel colors. It would've been nice to have better (man) color or graphic options for my sewing machine (like the TB12). I'm a 35yo man in the military serving a combat assignment in Iraq. Pastel colors on my sewing machine is not condusive to my nature. Miniscule complaint, yes. But I believe in equal opportunity and options.

Aside from the tedious CONS, the Sewist 500 is a great machine for the price ($249.00 @ Mr. Sew & Mrs. Vac).

5Great for Beginners!
By Dan & Sarah
My husband bought me this machine for an early Mother's Day gift. I am really new to sewing and so far am in love with my Janome!! It was so easy to learn to wind the bobbin and thread the machine, going by just the manual. I haven't sewn a thing since 8th grade home ec and after 2 days of practicing I've already hemmed some things and fixed a few seams in my husbands' boxer shorts ;) The machine itself is very solidly built and runs so smoothly, it makes me feel silly for being so nervous about sewing for so long. I wish I had gotten one years ago! I would definitely recommend this machine to anyone looking to get into sewing for the first time, or anyone who just wants a good, solid-running machine that will last for many years. I've always heard good things about Janome and this machine is no exception.

5Janome Sewist 500
By SandySK
I love it, love it, love it. I haven't sewn for years, but decided that I would give a shot at making new bedding after taking a textiles class this spring. The Janome came with excellent reviews and a "test drive" revealed the excellent nature of the machine. The stitches are exquisite. And it is probably the easiest, most intuitive machine I have ever touched. It is solidly built and has more features than most sewers will ever use. I also like the fact that it is mechanical, rather than electronic (fewer things to go wrong). An all around great machine.
